Nine months here and I remain— caught between the lines of my writing, between the streets of the city, and the shrouds of the martyrs… — Nada, 17 yrs, Gaza, 2024

My name is Alexis and I am honored to be fundraising on behalf of my friend Husam Khaled and his family, who are trapped in Gaza. Husam is a 27-year old registered nurse with extensive experience in NICU and surgical care who worked in Al Shifa Hospital before it was destroyed. Six weeks into the genocide, Husam was able to evacuate Gaza with his pregnant wife but was separated from his parents, sister, and extended family, who have remained trapped in Gaza. His family home was badly damaged in an airstrike and his little sister, Nada, who is just 17 years old with dreams of being a doctor, was severely injured and is still recovering from burns. Husam is terrified for his family and with evacuations no longer possible for them, he is doing everything he can to help them survive day to day. As of writing this in June 2025, aid in Gaza is restricted to extremely volatile and dangerous American run “humanitarian corridors.” In the last week alone, over 500 unarmed people have been killed by the Israeli Army. For those who do not want to risk their lives getting a box of food aid, or cannot walk to the distribution sites, options are scarce. Food at the markets in Gaza is unaffordable. Staples like flour and rice cost at least 3 times (3x) what they did during the ceasefire in February. Nutritious fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes or cucumbers, cost more than 7x.

In addition to Husam’s elderly parents, his family includes Nada,17 years (pictured); Ahmad, 22 years; Momen, 26 years; Kholud (pictured), 32 years and her two small children Sara (pictured), 3 years and Usama (pictured), 6 years.

Husam’s family is struggling to survive. He is looking to raise enough through donations to be able to send at least $2,000 USD to his family each month over the next year. For a family of eight, this still isn’t enough, but it will help them make it through this horrific time. Thank you for any support you can provide!Thank you for any support you can provide!

The following is a message from Husam:

Nada will turn 18 years in the next October, Nada is obsessed with writing and she always sends me her daily war diaries and her plans after the war is over (see screen shots below). She always reminds me to be thankful whatever happened to you. Today she sent me her dream and goals, one of her dreams is to buy a mobile that offers E-SIM service because the internet service has been blocked in Gaza by the occupation so they find themselves forced to use Mobiles that support E-SIM. One day while I was speaking with her by video call, I was eating an apple. I felt I did something wrong and I regretted to do such a thing in front of her, knowing that vegetables, fruits, and most food are not completely allowed to enter Gaza since about 7 months and my family as all Gazan Families eat only beans in cans on a daily basis. Nada and my family love animals and before the war they had a beautiful cat called Katty. She was a white adorable cat. She had heterochromia (a mutation in the DNA leads to having a different eye color in each eye). She was affected by starving as my family was. Nowadays, it is hard to find cat food in Gaza, so they found themselves forced to release Katty because they can’t afford her food. Before the war, we were a united, middle-class family. We felt we had everything. We had a home, jobs and stable life. The war has changed everything. I got evacuated. However, my mind and heart are still there in Gaza with my family. The goal of this campaign is to help my family survive in Gaza. Every month I try to help them by my own, but the prices became unbearable. Therefore, I resorted to establish this campaign to help them.

These are some of Nada’s diary entries and poems that she sent to Husam, with translation:

We Have Seen Torment On one of those long, agonizing nights of war— a war that strikes our hearts before our bodies— we have grown weary of it. Still, the man’s screams echo in my mind. Imagine it: people being burned alive. What did that man, that child, that woman, that elderly man see? What kind of torment did they endure? To be burned alive— it is betrayal, injustice, oppression. Your voice doesn’t leave my mind.

— Nada, 17 yrs, Gaza, 2024 (This has been written during Alnusirat Massacre in 8 June, 2024 )

Nine months here— and I remain, caught between the lines of my writing, between the streets of the city, and the shrouds of the martyrs.

Nine months, perhaps more, and I am still lost— searching for a sense of self. But I haven’t found it yet.

Disappointments come one after another, and a single flower is enough to weaken me.

I didn’t get into medical school. I didn’t complete my studies. I’m stuck in a chapter of nothingness.

My body, frail. Insomnia never leaves me. Alone—trapped within four walls, I write in anger about that decaying human being.

I wander through the stations of people, but there’s no one left.

Only these words remain— my pen, my blue ink.

And I will keep writing until I find a title. I will keep writing until I reach the end of nothing.
